A photo of ZerNona Black as USO YWCA director.

In 1943, ZerNona took up a position as director of the San Antonio USO for the Black Military. Although it was originally supposed to be only a three-month long assignment, the job sparked ZerNona’s lifelong love and devotion to San Antonio. Her work with the USO reflects her commitment to helping the black community through her dedication to the most basic community: the family.
