Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” was a national campaign aimed at decreasing poverty in America. The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was a crucial step to achieving Johnson's goals. This act provided legislation and funding to expand educational opportunities, increase services for the poor and unemployed, and provide for the elderly. The Economic Opportunity Act was critical to mobilizing community leaders across the nation to address conditions of poverty in their local communities. The service work the Blacks dedicated themselves to on San Antonio’s East Side was part of a larger national movement to decrease poverty nationwide.
