Screen Captures from a 1989 video of Matias performing his one-man-show Nova Niño (New Boy). “Nova” is the feminine form of “new” in Portuguese, so this is an act of gender nonconformity that also showcases the history of Portuguese residence in Provincetown. Matias wrote this play shortly after he moved to Provincetown in 1988, so we might read this as his coming out as he began his new life in a gay-friendly city.
