William Black, Jr., President San Antonio Baptist Ministers Union 333 Nebraska Street San Antonio 3, Texas: Dear Dr. Black: Dr. Billy Graham has asked me to write and thank you, on his behalf, for your recent letter representing the Baptist Ministers Union of San Antonio, and to assure you that we had no political interest in mind at all in our recent evangelistic soul-winning effort there in San Antonio. • lve came at the invitation of, we thought, all the ministers of San Antonio to put on a one-night evangelistic rally. The night we came was the only night that Mr. Graham had available for this rally'. He did not realize that it was the night before the Democratic primary in the State of Texas. Even though there are many things in the life of Governor Price Daniel with which we might disagree, he is still the head of the sovereign State of Texas, and he came only in the capacity of first man of the state to welcome Billy Graham to Texas and, more specifically, to San Antonio. This has happened all over America and in various parts of the world. We do not ask a man to give us his theological position nor his political position before we accept his invitation to come to his country or to his state. I would think that you men could understand our viewpoint. Secondly, you have said that you have heard that Billy Graham is to go to South Africa. I do not know where you got your information; but he has no plans to visit South Africa. Certainly if he should to to South Africa, he would not have aQY segregated meetings. We have never had in recent years any segregated meetings, and I think that you will agree with me tha. t Mr. Graham has done more for the cause of integration than perhaps aQY other white minister in the world. His ministry has been not only nationwide, but world-wide; and we have received literally thousands of letters from ministers of other races commending Dr. Graham for his article in Life Magazine about a year ago, his extended article in Ebony Magazine, and literal.ly thousands of statements which he has made-- both publicly and privately. We were delighted to see Antonio the other night. as zealous for Christ in better race relations in so maQY negro friends in our meeting down in San We sincerely hope and pr~ that you men will be trying to win the lost as you are in trying to the United States and the world at large.
